Kindness Cardi, Weeks 27 & 28, My Voice, My Choice and Stay Woke

This fortnight has been another warm one, which means the Kindness Cardi hasn’t spent much time on my shoulders! Instead, it’s mostly been keeping me company while I’ve been sneaking in a few rows whenever I can.

Some knitting happened in cafés, some in the back garden while the kids splashed about in the paddling pool, and those little pockets of time all add up. I always think that’s one of the lovely things about knitting. Even ten minutes here and there moves a project forward.

A few people have asked how I knit the colourwork sections, so I thought I’d slow things down this week and show you.

Everyone develops their own way of holding yarn, and mine has evolved over the years into something that feels natural. When I’m purling, I make sure the yarns cross over in front of me to keep everything sitting neatly. On the knit rows, I tension both yarns on my right hand and simply switch between fingers depending on which colour I need. It probably sounds more complicated than it is, but after enough practice your hands seem to know what to do without you even thinking about it.

One of the things I love about this project is that every panel tells a story.

This fortnight’s first panel is ‘My Voice, My Choice’, highlighting the fantastic work of the organisation of the same name. If you haven’t come across them before, they’re well worth looking up on social media to see the work they do.

The second panel simply says, ‘Stay Woke’. Like so many of the messages on the cardigan, it’s there to spark conversations, encourage curiosity and remind us to keep paying attention to the world and the people around us.

As you’re reading this, I’ll hopefully be somewhere a little warmer. Our annual family holiday to Portugal has arrived, which means the Kindness Cardi will be travelling abroad too! There will almost certainly be some holiday knitting by the pool, and I’ll be back in a couple of weeks to show you how the project is coming along.
